The Western Tien-Shan is perfect for trekkers seeking spectacular scenery without extreme altitude, who want a genuine wilderness experience without carrying a heavy pack. Compact, verdant and richly biodiverse, this range packs turquoise alpine lakes, ancient juniper forests, walnut groves and panoramic passes.
At its heart lies Lake Sary-Chelek — Central Asia's third-deepest lake (234 m), cradled in a tectonic basin 1,873 m above sea level. Its waters are so clear that on calm days you can spot fish and submerged rock formations at remarkable depth. The lake sits within the Sary-Chelek Biosphere Reserve, surrounded by sheer cliffs, spruce stands and fragrant archa (juniper) forests.
This 8-day trek takes you through wild walnut forests, alpine meadows, and over three scenic passes. All luggage is carried by horses — so you hike light, with just a daypack.
